Lehigh Acres Fire Rescue stations 102, 101 and 104 "B" shift and Battalion 100, acting Chief Collins, were dispatched at 0925 hours on 11/18/09 to 220 South Lake Drive for a reported house fire. Upon arrival, Engine 102 Lieutenant Ronco reported he had a 1 story house with heavy fire showing. Lt Ronco assisted Firefighter Edinger in stretching a 1 3/4 inch hand line and then commenced his walk around.
Truck 104 & Engine 101 soon arrived and assisted with overhaul and extinguishing hot spots. A neighbor reported that he and another neighbor had pulled the elderly resident from a rear lanai when he refused to leave his house. The resident stated to LAFD Chief Adams that he had been removing old gasoline from his lawn tractor and tried to get rid of the old fuel by lighting it on fire.
The victim received flash burns to his face and was complaining of difficulty breathing. LAFD Rescue 101 treated and transported the elderly gentleman to Lehigh Regional Medical Center.
